That is until we got a letter from the I.R.S. Not only did they want copies of our receipts-- which we had, they wanted canceled checks and credit card statements all the way back from our adoption in 2006. What????
I love a task and went to work gathering what we had in the house. I made calls. I ordered checks and statements and copies of what we needed. I sorted and organized and put it all together. I did exactly what the letter told me to, wrote a statement of each expense and what it was for and then added my "proof" that we paid each expense. When it was all said and done, almost 200 pages were mailed off. I stood back and looked at what we were sending. *shakes head*
So this is what it takes to adopt a child...(a dossier)
And this what it takes to prove to the IRS that you actually adopted a child...(our response to the request for more information- aka AUDIT.)
Something seems a bit off here...I am just sayin'
SOOOOO- what have we learned here folks? Keep a copy of everything. And, keep it for a good long time because you never know when you might need to send 200 pages of it to the government for review.
